Khaleda Zia Gold Cup chess tournament to be held in Narayanganj

Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP member secretary Advocate Md. Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu has announced the organization of the 'Khaleda Zia Gold Cup Chess Tournament' in Narayanganj in memory of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

He made this announcement as the chief guest at the award distribution ceremony of the FIDE International Rating Chess Tournament organized by the Narayanganj Chess Academy on Saturday. He said that the tournament will be organized within the next two months.

Former joint secretary of the Bangladesh Chess Federation Morsalin Ahmed was present as a special guest at the event. Narayanganj Chess Academy President Mehedi Hasan Mishu presided over the event. Former vice president of the Bangladesh Chess Federation Md. Jahangir Islam delivered the welcome address. FIDE arbitrator Mohammad Shamim moderated the event.

Earlier, the final results of the two-day Narayanganj Chess Academy FIDE International Rating Chess Competition held at the auditorium of Narayanganj Cambrian School and College were announced.

Indian Amateur FIDE Master Sourav Chaubey became the undefeated champion in the competition by scoring full 5 points. Candidate Master Avik Sarkar became the runner-up in the tie-breaking method by collecting 3.5 points.

Candidate Master Sohel Chowdhury came third with the same points and Muhtadi Tajwar Nasheed came fourth.

A total of 20 players from India, Sri Lanka and host Bangladesh participated in the five-round Swiss league system. The winners were given cash prizes.

It is worth noting that the successful organization of this two-day international rating chess competition and the announcement of organizing the ‘Khaleda Zia Gold Cup Chess Competition’ in the future have created new enthusiasm in the chess arena of Narayanganj.
