Hasan Mahmud has become the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket, grabbing three wickets in three consecutive balls against Afghanistan on the third day of the one-off Test on Sunday in Abu Dhabi.

Hasan dismissed Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmad and Zia-ur-Rehman in the 83rd over at Zayed Cricket Stadium, becoming only the second Bangladesh bowler to achieve the feat in the longest format of cricket.

The 26-year-old ended a 13-year wait for Bangladesh’s third Test hat-trick, following off-spinner Sohag Gazi’s achievement against New Zealand in Chattogram in October 2013.

Before them, Alok Kapali recorded the first hat-trick for Bangladesh in Test cricket. It came against Pakistan in 2003.

Hasan first bowled Ismat for one with a delivery that moved back into the batter and passed beneath his bat. He then induced an outside edge from Qais, who was caught by wicketkeeper Litton Das diving to his right.

Zia was trapped lbw on the next ball. The on-field umpire initially rejected the appeal, but Bangladesh reviewed the decision, and ball-tracking confirmed the delivery would have hit the stumps.

Afghanistan, who had started the day at 211 for four, were dismissed for 240, adding just 29 runs while losing their remaining six wickets.

Hasan Mahmud took four of those six wickets to finish with five for 55, while Ebadot Hossain claimed the other two to end with four for 56.

Afghanistan captain Rahmat Shah scored an unbeaten 105, his fourth Test century and second against Bangladesh. Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 62.

However, Bangladesh continued domination in response, reaching 153 for three in their second innings till the report to build a lead of 259 runs.

Mushfiqur Rahim was batting on 61 and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto on 38, with the pair adding an unbeaten 100-run partnership after Bangladesh lost three wickets for 53 runs.

Opener Tanzid Hasan was the only Bangladesh batter dismissed in the second session, scoring 31 off 38 balls. He was caught at second slip off Yamin Ahmadzai after edging a back-of-a-length delivery.

Najmul and Mushfiq then steadied the innings, helping Bangladesh recover from the early setbacks. Najmul also survived an lbw appeal after successfully reviewing the umpire’s decision, with replays showing the ball would have missed the stumps.

Earlier, Bangladesh had posted 346 in their first innings, riding on half-centuries from opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim (83), Shadman Islam (67) and Liton Das (53).

In reply, Afghanistan showed resistance through Abdul Malik's 62 and Rahmat Shah's 88, but Hasan's late burst, coupled with Ebadot Hossain's three wickets, halted their progress.

Bangladesh XI: Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Mominul Haque, Najmul Hossain (captain), Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das (wicketkeeper), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Taijul Islam and Ebadot Hossain.
